Re: new build 36lite with vvr
Thanks, ordered 2.3mm tip for my antex 25w iron, no temp control but it's supposed to be a decent budget model.

Do some practice soldering with the new tip, and make sure things look like the soldering videos. If it's not too difficult, then you should be fine.

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
Sitting down to sketch in MV, effects loop and VVR. will any of these have any adverse effect on the tone if they're up on full or the loop is not in use?

The vvr, no! I thought that was out of the signal path and if turned up full all the voltages would be as normal?

Could you also please send me a link to a systematic with the type 2 MV you're referring to so I can try to incorporate it, thanks.

Not being in the signal path doesn't mean it's not affecting the tone. Why do you think B+ voltages are crucial to an amp's tone?
Vvr needs a high current/voltage mosfet. They're pricey.. and easily damaged. Imho you need to include an octal tube rectifier to be easy on the mosfet when powering up the amp.
Plus... you already know what the effect of vvr is by switching your HT voltage on the Ampmaker power transformer. The 2W sucks major!

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
I get that with the vvr but is it still adversely affecting tone when turned up full?
Another question
Is there a convention on the colours of wires on layout diagrams and in the actual amp?
Thanks.

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
Sorry Bieworm but I have to disagree about VVR. In my experience varying the voltage on the phase inverter and power stages of an 18 watt style amp does not adversely impact on the tone until you get to very low outputs. I would agree that if you reduce the preamp voltages you get some unpleasant side effects. As you pointed out about the transformer switch. My VVR has been in constant use for ten years. The mosfet has worked fine all that time seeing off two sets of EL84s.
It did not work so well on some other amps so the only one I actually use it on is an 18 watt.

Thanks for your experience davie, ill look at the schematic for pi and power vvr only.

Turret board layout with valve connections and a few other connections. I'll just write the resistor and capacitor values out from the schematic.

Schematic with the resistor and capacitor numbers on. Sorry if it's all too spidery and pencil handwritten. I understand if no one can face peering at it...
I think im on the right track anyway. If anyone thinks I can fit my turrets to my board as per my drawing please shout and give me the go ahead!

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
I think tapatalk lowers the picture quality as the photo of the schematic before I posted it was perfectly readable. I'll try it in sections. Hope it's clear to someone.

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
Went to bed and realised r24 and 25 probably can't go up on the board to feed the heater circuit. Are they a centre tap?

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
There is a schematic in the downloads 18 watt lite iib with vvr on pi and pa. It is in the mods and ideas section. Implementing that equivalents into your power stage should be what you are looking for.

Re: new build 36lite with vvr
R24 is a B+ dropping resistor and R25 is one of the artificial center tap resistors for the heater circuit.
