Reverb tank position/installation

Post by foreverstrung »

I finished building the 18w TMB w/reverb a few months ago and am having a little issue with the reverb tank. On the bench, with the amp and reverb tank side by side, the reverb channel is very quiet. Works great, sounds great. When I put them both together in the amp "head", (not combo), I'm getting way too much unwanted ****. I've tried flipping the tank from right side up to upside down. I've got the positive RCA jack farthest from the input of the amp. Should I consider building a separate enclosure for just the tank?

I usually mount the reverb tanks on the top panel of heads, with the red RCA jack farthest away from the OT.

I lightened this old photo of my personal amp so you can see the placement:

I can't tell how you've anchored it to the top. Did you use strapping? Velcro?
Also, did you have the bottom of the tank facing down or up or does it matter?
Thx

I use half inch #8 screws to screw it in (be careful that the hardware you choose won't go all the way through the cabinet wood).

The open part of the tank needs to be facing the wood it's mounted to. That's why it's hard to see; you're looking at a black reverb tank inside a black head.

I can't tell for sure, but do you have this tank in a tolex sleeve? Does it matter if there is a sleeve or no?
Thx

No sleeve. The sleeves are usually for using velcro and/or staples to mount. I prefer just screwing the thing in. Different situations might benefit from a different method, but that works for me, especially in heads.

If you do use a sleeve, it's usually recommended to layer some cardboard under the opening to give the tank something solid to reflect against.
