Talk me into or out of this build...

Post by DWSumms09 »

Alright I want a low watt plexi. I have been after the plexi sound for awhile and I did try the SV20 a couple of times and for some reason just doesn't hit it for me. I don't know that starving the EL34s or whatever they do to make them 20 watts is better than just using 6v6 or EL84s. It is a bit too harsh and bright I am looking more for 67-68' SL tones and I think these are a more metal panel vibe but could be wrong.

Anyway I've been looking at kits and I don't want a TMB type but the Tube Town PX18 looks exactly like what I am looking for

https://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/tt-ki ... no_boost=1

My question is

1 would these transformers work in the USA or

2. should I buy the chassis and faceplate from them and use their schematic (or the 18 watt plexi schematic on the downloads) and source parts and transformers from US suppliers (valvestorm, Mojo etc.)

Its been awhile but do have some build experience (my dad and I built a JTM45 from Metro many years ago, and I stupidly sold it because it was too loud)

So I guess normal voltage of 120 and these should be fine? I just wasn't sure if any modifications would need to be made for US voltages.

If a transformer says 120 on it, you won't likely need any mods. If it says 110 or 115, you might need to drop your B+, but it's not a big deal either way.

One thing is to be considered

On the old times the standard tolerance applied on guitar amps was around 20%, so if you are building a clone of an old amp you can consider that being within that will suffice (obviously we always try to be within values that are near those of the schematics)
