Output Swing

Post by Crabman »

Is there a good reason why the 18W PI uses a 47K or 56K tail resistor and not something smaller. The target voltage across this resistor appears to be around 70V.

Working through Merlin's LTP calc's it would appear that the available HT would be 290-70 = 22OV and this plots out around 145V output swing on the ECC83 load line chart with 100K anode resistor. The actual output swing would be a bit smaller since the 100K anode resistor is in parallel with 470K grid leak.

So what is the optimal output swing required to drive an EL84?

Looking at amps like the PT20 with a 27K tail resistor ... the output swing on these amps must be must be hitting their EL84s quite a bit harder??
