18W JCM800, chasing perfect tone

Post by MarcinD »

Hi again!
We already had such discussion about issues in my amp, it looks like it is less/more stabe right now but now i started to look for modification to improve tone :) Now I'm playing with PI and power amp, I read somewhere that PI i'm using (Soldano Atomic values) are not the best and i decided to change it a little, but I'm not quite shure what will sound best for smooth overdrive sound as expected from JCM800 especially that I want NFB with presence control and classic EL84 designs don't have NFB. What can You tell about given schematic and how can I further modify it to check tonal differences?

To smoothen it up I would suggest to lower the B+ substantially. Higher B+ yields more headroom, but it also makes the tone more agressive and harsher imho.
380V on the plates is pretty steep for any EL84 anyway.
