Transformer for 18-20 watt amp

Post by rossco »

Hi everyone im new but I've been around for 20 years , I play Dr Z Maz 18mkii and a cornford hurricane 20

My cornford hurricane 20, I was getting intermittent volume drops by about 6 db SPL.

Anyway after a month smells like the transformer fried, red plated an output tube (by the looks) blew fuse and died. Tried ALL new tubes and fuse and won't turn on because it's blowing fuses, won't turn on at all.

** Would anyone suspect, the output transformer would have been the culprit? After thinking a bit more I though power transformer

tried to reseat and retension a very loose V1 but I'm not great with that.

It's in the tech but they are never helpful with tubes amps.

I would rather think a shorted tube was the culprit, and it might have taken the OT ad killed it.
Unsolder the secondary wires abd check them for shorts. Put a DMM on the 16 ohm tap and on the black common wire. Measure that resistance.
Pul the power tubes and measure between the pin of each plate wire (pin 7) and the wire going to the filter cap. Measure that resistance.

This is a pic of the one output tube that looks like I'd red plated or something. That's a Russian 6p14p

I'll report back when I have tested everything and fixed the issues. Hopefully I didn't waste 300 AUD on a new transformer for nothing.

What do you mean? You already ordered the transformer? In that case let’s hope your current transformer is ok. Then you have a spare one or use it for another build?
It is not wise to assume something failed. You have to know for sure. There are always ways to reveal the culprit of failure.
I keep repeating this mantra and everyone should learn it: it’s a tube amp. When something fails FIRST check the tubes.
