Ideas for a 7199

Post by dartanion »

Hi All,

I just came into a grab bag of NOS tubes which included an RCA 7199. Any ideas what to do with this badboy? Cascaded or parallel preamp gain stages? What is this tube really known for?

It is known as the bane of many an Ampeg owner.
Nice preamp tube but hard to get. Give it to someone who wishes the old Reverberocket was back to normal

That's the driver tube in a Dynaco Stereo-70 hifi amp too.

The Sunns with 7199s or 6AN8s were based on Dynaco designs and even used Dynaco transformers.

COOL!!!

I also got a lot of other strange tubes that I'll have to run by you guys. I'll have to google for some Dynaco and Sunn reviews or articles. What is a good NOS 7199 worth? I know some of these Hi Fi guys are nuts about tubes. Anyone know how to read the date codes or how to date certain tubes?

I've got an old Ampeg Gemini II on the bench right now with a 7199.

I am going to retube it too.

This thing sounds pretty good though.

Yes, it's used in the PI position in Ampegs, in fact it's specially designed for the concertina PI that those amps used. A driver half followed by a PI half.

I've contemplated using them in a preamp section, (Sovtek sold them new a year or so ago, they're probably still available) but I couldn't find the necessary specs. I found datasheets but the info I needed wasn't on them.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable could help us out, it could be interesting to have such a triode/pentode combo in a preamp.
