Rectifier advice needed....do I drill an octal or a 9piner?

Hey folks,

I'm going to start drilling tube socket holes either late this morning or early afternoon.

I'm still a tad undecided about what I'm going to drill...so I figured I'd ask the players gallery over here. My PT is a hammond 270FX, so I've got the 5v recto tap and the 6.3 heater tap. I'm *sure* have enough available power for the ez81 to be heated off of the regular heater tap....so I can certainly just go in that direction.

However, I had read in a few past posts that some people have had success with the 5Y3, especially in the Lite, which is what i'm building. I'm aware the 5Y3 drops more voltage than the ez81....which might result in less headroom...which isn't on my list of favorite things...But the cool thing, as far as I can tell....with an octal recto, is that I can play around with different tubes and experiment.


Anyway....what do you guys think? Should I drill the 9pin hole or the octal?

If you want options, you could drill the octal and either build (or buy from Weber VST) a bolt on conversion plate which has the 9-pin hole built in. That way, though you'd have to swap and rewire the sockets, you could go either way.

Even though a 5Y3 drops more voltage a GZ won't. Using either will give you a range of sag. The other option is to use a Weber Copper Cap rectifer, which can be ordered in a range of sag. You could have weber custom make an ez81 style in an octal package.

Niiiiice! I forgot about the coper cap option....and the possibility of getting an 'ez81 in an octal' .....

Looks like I'm going with the octal boys!

Now I gotta figure out where to drill these socket holes. Any advice guys? spacing? placement?
