First-bornification complete!

Post by Psalm150 »

Well, I think the difference is subtle, but noticable. The main difference to me is that it just has a loser feel and sound. I think there's more bloom to the notes, and the overdriven sound is better than before. It seems to breath more and seems more alive somehow. And seems to sustain a bit better at all volumes.
In contrast I think the previous wiring was a bit more stiff feeling and sounding and a bit less open sounding. And I thought that version sounded great. Well worth doing! :!: :!:

The 2 channels are still out of phase by the way.

Oh! almost forgot in all my excitement...
A huge THANK YOU :!: to Ian for all your trouble, to Gabi and Plexi and the Italian guy (sorry, forgot your screen name) and others I'm forgetting for all the hard work :!:
What a great site! I mean the amp ruled before, but now...you really can't describe it.

Here I am!
Have you already gave a look to the layout? Do you think it is correct?
Thanks!
Bye!

I don't know, Attilio. I just used the 2 layouts that reflect the changes, I dodn't really look at yours too closely.

Ok, Attilio. There are only 3 problems with your layout. And it's the same thing on each socket:
On V3: pin 3 not pin 8 goes to the 820/50uf
on V2: pin 3 not pin 8 goes to the 820 ohm resistor
on V1: pin 3 not 8 goes to the 50uf/820 ohm.

Oh, one more thing, the trem pedal has to go to pin 2 instead of 7.
Everything else is good.

The other thing I'd like to add is that I changed that 56k resistor (the top of that little 'peace' sign of resistors) to a 47k (a la Ian' amp) before I did this wiring swap and it seemed to help to my ears.

Psalm150 very good description, Its about what i described over in the other thread. As you and i both agree its subtle, but noticeable, and in a better way..and seems to help in the picking of the notes.. As you said ""{ It seems to breath more and seems more alive somehow, And seems to sustain a bit better at all volumes.}"" Thats why i was hoping people would play the amp before the changes.. And then after.. so they have it fresh in their mind or ear..

Hi Psalm150,

Thanks for the name-check! But really it’s me who should be thanking everyone here for all the expert help in identifying my amp, especially Richie who took the trouble to explain a whole mass of stuff to me.

Just relieved that your amp sounds OK, and the changes didn’t send the whole lot up in a shower of sparks.

Cheers guys,

Ian.

Ps:- but my amp may indeed go up in sparks, because I’m shortly going to try putting 240 Volts through it (i.e. without any check-over from a Tech)! If you don’t hear from me again, then I’m dead!

PLexi-
Yeah, the trem. It works, but it takes about 3-4 seconds to start after switching it on??

Did it work ok before the swap? Or did it always do that. The tube used in the trem can effect that,as along with other things.. But just trying to find out all i can, if there are changes in the way things work good or bad ,that goes with the swap. Maybe after a few more have tried it, like i said the trem still may be fickle. Is yours stock?.. and are you useing anything across the switch, etc.. I was thinking, we may need to keep all the added things off the layout..Like the fix things added on the trem switch,etc.. Just have one stock layout.. Then could add another file for changes or fixes and add ons. mods etc..
The trem was the only thing i usually kinda modified on my amps. But just wanted to pass that on..

The trem is stock, no caps or anything across the switch. Before the wiring switch there was a slight delay, maybe 1-2 seconds. Now it seems to have doubled.

I think you'll find.. tubes and tube differences will still make a big difference in the trem.. And how it works. I just tried some, and Some worked great.. some were not as good. So it still helps to pick or find,or do some swapping to find a tube that works good in the trem. So that much still may be the same..

First-Born schematic?

Post by Ron »

Someone asked me to look into the First Born version. Is there a schematic of it posted somewhere, or are the variations included in the main 18-watter schematic???

I've read the First Born thread and didn't see any lists of component values and component numbers.

FYI, my fave version these days has an EF86 first preamp and stock second channel. It's a lot ballsier that way, and you still have the "clean" rhythm channel w/tremolo.

Thanks, Ron

The schematic isn't out yet, although it's being worked on right now, by Mark Huss, I'm told. However, Gabi (aka Gabstero) has posted a list of all the layout changes with ref to the Pedal Monkey schematic. See the 'Layout Drawings' thread.

Theres a couple things that might be hard to straighten out with the pedalmonkey schematic.. and just be able to tell the changes, without changing a few things on that schematic.
