Komet-style preamp attached to 36W pi+pwr?
has anyone tried a Komet-style preamp like this:
http://maximoaudio.com/download/schemat ... iation.jpg
married to a 36W (Richie-style) PI & power amp?
thought I'd ask before I solder ...
still on the fence about what exactly to build.

That looks a lot like a Fender style preamp with an extra gain stage on the end. If you like more of a Fender sound with more gain, then that would help get there. I personally think a 2204 preamp on the front of the 36 (with the 1/2 power switch) would sound more Marshally. The think is, with a little clever layout work you could try both.

yeah i am working on that layout. it's just a matter of a couple of parts swaps and move a few wires and bingo, it changes
but I figured before I built something that was likely to bomb, I'd ask around... I think at present I'm planning to start with the Komet pre unless someone talks me out of it, and then if it doesn't suit me, change to the regular TMB...

Yes that has been done.. The Trex 36 or first one i built, was a combination of a Wreck channel..and the 18 channel melded together.. Mark Huss i believe has it on his site, and His red house clips he used that amp.. Mark also made a few changes to change the gain or more fine tune it. but yeah it rocks..

yes I've seen that, although I know from tinkering with my TW-inspired Princeton that the devil is in the details, and there are quite a few notable differences between the Komet pre I posted vs. the regular Express-type pre, and of course your Trex amp deviates somewhat from the Express-type pre in a couple of the "devlish" details such as the tone stack, extra 150K resistor, PI coupling caps ... But the Komet pre is even more different.
I'll look for the clips
My original plan was more of a regular Express-style preamp into a 36W power stage but presently I am rethinking that idea since my PR kind of covers the wreck territory and I want something more flexible, thinking maybe the Komet will get me there. ?

Well yes thats true, but also to combine the 2,i kept the PI more like the 18 watter in design.. You'll also have to make a few changes from an express, since it will be too much gain .. As what Mark did in his.. i think i told him he may need to lower it some on that channel. But it still has plenty. Its much harder to try and get 2 different preamps, though the same PI..and from 2 different amps designs that they came from, and have both sound like they should... so there has to be an inbetween somewhere. Now if it were just the one single channel..that would be much easier.. just build the Liverpool.. and use most of the 18 PI.

ok well I can't find the clips
I understand about getting two dissimilar preamp designs to work together in one amp ... I see you have two different PI coupling caps (.1uF on the wreck side per wreck spec). That makes a lot of sense.
Anyway...
To tame the "gain" I guess I was planning to use a MV on the OD channel (wreck or komet-style) channel, pre-PI. This is intended to be a "gig" amp so I need channel switching (even if remote A/B) and the ability to balance the vol between two channels so I'm looking at a drive/vol arrangement for the OD channel (basically a vol and master vol), and then a post-PI master vol for the whole thing. The "clean" channel (normal channel) does not have to have any overdrive at all ever for my purposes ... a little bit is fine, like a regular 18W vib channel.
Any opinion though about the differences between the Komet pre and a regular Express type pre? I can say from recent experience that the komet's .1uF coupling cap and 330K resistor between the second and third stages have to sound enormously different from the .002uF/150K Express arrangement, and of course the 0.68uF bypass cap on the input stage is going to be very different. End result is probably approximately the same voicing but I have to wonder if the Komet is more flexible? I like the clips of a Komet Constellation a LOT more than any Express clips I have heard.
Oh well I start building this weekend ... tube sockets, pots & jacks... long time before I have to settle on the OD channel preamp arrangement.
