Hi folks, looking for some help with this old resistor, it is 2 color, yellow body with a violet or purple end. Ive seen some old 3 color but not this. I have 4 or 5 in my old Electromuse amp, they read anywhere from .550M to .740M

Thanks

Steve

The code is read body, tip, dot - there should be a dot on the side.
The tolerance would be +/-20%.

I would guess your dot is yellow, because it doesn't show! But seriously - that is what you're looking at. If you don't see a dot or stripe, it is the same as the body color. Sometimes you get 2k2ohm resistors and they are red all over.

That would be yellow purple yellow = 470 kohm which could be as high as 564kohm and still be in spec, which accords with the values you have found.

I would use a multimeter and measure it

My apologies I misread the first post I would split the difference at say .650M and try that and see how it works.

And how do you think the bloke came to this conclusion?

Waste of time, mate - and you are guessing. My evaluation of the actual indicated value is correct at 470kohm - go search for tip and dot resistor color code. These old carbon composition resistors do increase in value as they age, so it is time they get replaced if they are out of limits.
