preamp separated from poweramp

I want to build the Pete Ankelein/Richie Hall 36 watt,in part. I actually want to build the power section on one board and experiment with different preamp designs on a separate board. Other than the heaters and one red wire that goes under the board it looks like i could split the circuit right before the PI coupling cap. What does that red wire do and can i do without it?

The 'red wire' is the power supply voltage to the preamp.

There's no problem with physically separating the boards, but the split-off preamp board will need its own connections to B+ and ground.
