Sylvania 12ax7 in the 18 --interesting

I got a syl from TT. Supposedly they are very high gain tubes. My 18 watt is very sensitive to tube changes and is great for testing microphonics! any way,i digress. I tried another one and it brightened things up so much that i couldnt really dial out much of the high end on my bridge pup, but with my neck pup(both wolfie legend in an r9) it was really amazing.

Anyone else have any comments on this tube?

Geez, there have been so many different versions of the Sylvania 12AX7s I'd have to see which ones you have. They roughly follow RCA as far as versions per era go, RCA has 'em beat during the black plate era although the Sylvania black plates sure are shiny! Then they go long grey plate during the early '60s and short grey plate suring the late '60s. There's also a mind boggling variety of Sylvania lettering colors and styles. There's plenty of choices within the brand.

The Sylvania 12AX7WA is probably the most durable 12AX7 ever. They keep going... and going...

I went mining in the back of my Music Man RD112 fifty and came out with a Sylvania 12ax7. I put it in the V1 position of my SIII Trinity V6. Nice. It's pretty gainy. I'm still swapping tubes around and trying all sorts of combinations. I just put a GE 12at7 in the PI. With the 6v6's and the channels jumped and the boost switch on, it sounds like a Deluxe with a badass attitude.

Drop it in your PI. They seem to add a nice upper midrange compliment to a Mullard in V1. My favorite 18W config is...

V1 Mullard
V2 Amperex Holland
V3 Sylvania (PI on mine)

Try it, You might like it.

I have had good experience with them. I may be the oddball but I tried all Mullard pre's in my amp and really didn't care for the sound. Too much of a good thing I guess. But I loaded it with 3 Sylvanias and it sounded pretty good.

Smokin--- great suggestion!!! As i mentioned my clone(rebuilt by the master Plexi) is very sensitive to microphonics. i will try it in the PI and see what happens.

I really do not understand what the Phase inverter and cathode follower do, so i never screwed with the tubes. I do have a mule in the V1 though
