18 watt sound clip

Post by 2BDH »

I bought a new recording mic, a Studio Projects B1 and recorded a sloppy clip, hope it doesn't suck too bad.
This mic is the best one I've tried so far for recording amplifiers. It can take the high pressure levels well.

Hey Brent!!

Two things!

1. I think the clips are sounding GREAT!!!! What did you used to record?

2. I DID NOT KNOW THAT WE CAN UPLOAD mpg sound formats into the gallery!!!

Thanks for the great discovery!!!!

Sure enough, great sounding clips!

Speaking of Studio Projects, I use 2 Studio Projects C1s in my little basement studio, I love 'em.

Cheers,

Thanks for the kind words even though my playing is really sloppy. I am just trying to get the recording to be what the amps really sound like. I think I am getting close.

The gear is, a Seasound solo preamp/sound card 24bit, the software is samplitude, The mic is a studio Projects B1, got it for $60.00 new from Ebay.

Samplitude converts 24bit waves to MPG files

Wow Brent. Nice work. Nice sound clips. I need your opinion. I noticed you're running a 2x12 setup with a Weber Blue Dog and Silver Bell. I'm headed for the same setup but in a 2x10 configuration. Would you recommend these two speakers together? If so, did you opt for the alnico or the ceramic, or one of each?

Thanks

Bud

I've got both alnico 15 watt webers in one amp and 2 ceramic 1230's 30 watt (g12h30 copies) in the other amp. I had a 1230 ceramic and a 30 watt blue dog alnico for a while but that amp sounded better with the two ceramic 1230"s. My favorite is the one with the 2 alnico speakers though. I have never tried 10 inch speakers with an 18 watt but I have a mix of alnico and ceramic 10 inch speakers in an Allen Old Flame 4-10 that sounds good. I say go for either all alnico or all ceramic.

The amp tone and the licks are very nice. However, whenever I listen to these samples the louder notes crackle and buzz quite badly. To me it sounds like the input of the recording system is being hit with too high a signal. Isn't anyone else hearing that?

You have good ears.

I can hear a little crackling if I put on my AKG 240 headphones on the mpg file that isn't there in the original wave file. Maybe I need to dither the 24 bit files to 16 bit before compressing to mpg files. I'll have to do some research on this.

Wow Brent and Phil!

Well I've got old eye and lousy ear too. That crackling must be in the frequency range I lost years ago fabricating steel cause I can't hear it. Beyond that, wow, great tone for sure.

Brent,

Very nice man! BTW I'm the guy that has your white 1 X 12 now. It's sounding great with some old Amperex 12AX7s and a set of 60's Mullard EL84s.

Brent,
I always like to hear the clips of the amps, So one clip is the TMB and the other is the 18.. We don't have to many of the TMB clips..
I also like the Amperex tubes!

I hear quite severe crackling on what appear to be all the peaks in the sound, which really spoil the clip, as the amp sound is so good. Maybe my Sennheiser headphones are more responsive....

Yes that first clip is the TMB. I changed the circuit in the 1936 cabinet that I cut up. BTW that cabinet sounds better than it ever did with a JCM 900 running into it

The clips are clipping the peaks. It seems you have to dither a 24 bit file to 16 bit before compressing to 128k. I didn't do that. I will put up some better ones this weekend.

I like the tone of the trem a little better personally but I really like the reverb you have on the lead in that same clip. Good work. I think this might be my very first post...

Yes sound files can be quirky,i had a guy record both a TMB and an 18 watter. These were done in a studio, kinda quick though. They both came out way too hot, over recorded, peaked or what ever you want to call it.
Once i heard them,i knew there was no way i'd post those, they were terrible. And the amps didn't sound like that while he was recording them.
Then they were dumped to MP3s. I still have them somewhere, but boy do they suck. I have a couple friends that have pro tools, and they recorded my other files. Very easy, they know what mics to use,and record flat,so you hear what the amp sounds like,no EQ-ing.

If i ever get time to finish my 36 watter,i'll make some files of it.

36 watt clips, cool looking forward to that.

I think its easy to get a good sound when the amp is at low volume but cranked is tough you always want to play with more gain than what actually sounds right. I don't like to use EQ either I'd rather mess with the mic placement or use a different mic.
