Hi all,
Phil (Zaphod) provided us with the 18 watt 1974X Marshall combo demo sound file from the Guitarist Magazine ( www.guitarist.co.uk ).
This one is played by Simon Bradley of Guitarist Magazine
Check it and let the discussion begin!
Gabi.

Sounds like they used a Gibson,or some humbucker guitar.
And sound files to MP3s can take away from how an amp really sounds live. But as we've said from the start..i don't think we will have any problem with our amps sounding as good or even better than the Marshall HW. I don't believe either Here or marshall will be in any competition on these amps. I think when they come out,and people try other guitars or there style playing,we can get a beter idea of how they sound.
Still it had the growl..lol Thanks for posting the Clip..Very interesting.
Did they have clips of the other HW amps?

In the same magazine issue Simon Bradley also demos a Wayne Villain guitar, by Wayne Charvel. It has a *very* hot, scooped-sounding EMG H/B on the bridge that sounds like er... sh*t on the demo CD. Going by the tone I'm hearing, I suspect that's the very same one he's unfortunately used for the dirty clip on the 18W demo, which was so eloquently described by JA. So we get the 18W does Nu Metal!
Also check out the 20W demo, which really rocks, and in the right kind of way! http://www.18watt.com/modules.php?name= ... highlight=

Phil, yeah it does sound like a very hot pickup..which will dull the highs .
i have a hot rod strat type guitar with a super distortion Dimarzio..and it can be a bit much sometimes. But you can tell something hotter than a strat is being used.
I listened to the 20 watter too..i liked that clip with the backing music..seems a better way to do a sound clip
thats what i was getting at..what was used for the guitar, will make the amp sound different.
Thanks for sharing those..

Well in this case it's worse than that, as it's an active EMG pickup on the bridge with what appears to be a frequency response tweaked for metal, which personally I wouldn't even want to use for metal.Plexi wrote:yeah it does sound like a very hot pickup..which will dull the highs i have a hot rod strat type guitar with a super distortion Dimarzio..and it can be a bit much sometimes. Yes, you're right. It's a different guy playing, and a different guitar. I have to say I was amazed that the 20W could sound so good. Never having seen one in real life, I had been thinking it must be some kind of second rate 18W.Plexi wrote:I listened to the 20 watter too..i liked that clip with the backing music..seems a better way to do a sound clip thats what i was getting at..what was used for the guitar, will make the amp sound different.

Also, I wonder how it was mic'd; I've found that by only putting a dynamic mic close on my 18, I miss a lot of the sweet phasing that gets thrown out into the room. A close sm57 can miss a lot of detail that a large diaphram condenser out in the room will accurately catch.Plexi wrote:Phil, yeah it does sound like a very hot pickup..which will dull the highs .

Overall, those clips sound like a good ol' 18 watter to me.
Cheers,
