phil,

i think there is the makings of a real contest here-------

1. max - $10.00
2. must be "some form" of 18watter (at least a p-p with 6l's or '84's)
3. photos and sound clips required.
4. must include a cabinet (or a reasonable facsimile - a roll cage and a speaker box would count.
4. no fair - "what i had laying around the house" i know some guys that have a stock in their workshop that would give mouser a run for their money.
5. no fair - "what i scrounged at work" - too meny electronics people here who have way too full dumpsters behind their office :)
6. document every source - "old phillips radio i found at a garage sale." "speaker from a hammond organ cabinet that my church was junking." "tubes from my neighbor's father who used to be a tv repaiman."

i mean real junkers.

what do you think?

And it must be built true point-to-point? And the scariest looking one wins?

i think anything goes - p2p, turret boards made out of treebark and carpet tacks, terminal strips, whatever - but yes, a special prize for the scariest (it would probably end up being the best sounding, too  )

Here's my submission, though I have to admit it breaks the "parts lying around" rule, although they really were all pretty scrounged, lots of series and parallel resistors and caps to get close to the right value and a MM 5E3 xformer set, was pretty lucky to have that lying around the house.

zaphod_phil wrote:Great work! You're either real clever or real lucky - especially with it all packed so close together there. Maybe you're both. :) And I mean that sincerely. There's no reason that P2P done well, by someone who knows what they're doing, shouldn't produce very quiet and stable builds. BTW how much did you have to play around with component and wire positions with each of your builds to get them working nicely?
Thanks!

Believe it or not, the thing actually worked very well exactly as I had it on paper. The only issue I had to deal with was the positioning of the OT primaries. No more than 1 min of pushing them around did the trick.
