G12H30 & Celestion Blue ok?
Hello Everyone, I'm new to your forum, although I've been a member of the other amp forums for years. I play professionally mostly in the summer at outside gigs, because I like to play 100 Watt tube amps really loud. I prefer to play Hendrix & old Classic Rock requiring great tube clipping by, of course, overdriving those 12AX7's along with some good sounding foot pedals. I'm definately interested in building an 18 Watt just to play in the house & small clubs. I've been listening to sound clips off your site & have heard a couple of clips that had hum,(buzz), in the clips. It is making me really wary about chosing which schematic to build from. I like vibrato & also reverb, so to find an amp with both that has a quite design factor would be great. Any suggestions from your senior members in this field would be greatly appreciated. I dabble with amps, modding effect pedals, & build computers for friends, so can hardly wait to start buying parts. I read somewhere that it's ok to use 2 different speakers in the 2-12 combo, so is the G12H30 & Celestion Blue ok to mix? Thanks in advance & Cheers! Glenn

Those are the two most popular choices for an 18 watt project, it seems.
I built an 18 watt TMB in a head format, and I run it through an open back 2x12 cab of my own design.which is loaded with an alnico Blue Dog and a ceramic 1230. These are Ted Weber's versions of the Celestion Blue and the G12H30 respectively - they sound incredible and cost less than the Celestions.
As my 18 watt has 4,8, and 16 ohm OT taps I can wire them in series or parallel (they're currently in series for 16 ohms).

This has been said here many times before but . . . just for fun . . .
When mixing speakers, it's somewhat important to get two speakers that have the same SPL (Sound Pressure Level) rating. This is sort of a rating of how much noise is put out. So if your speakers don't have the same SPL, one will be louder than the other and they will not blend very well.
With Celestions, the only two that have the same SPL are the G12H30 and the Alnico Blue. Since the two sound rather different, it's a really broad and dynamic tone when you mix them. I personally like it very much . . .although I'm testing an Eminence Red Fang right now and it's very cool!
I've spent a lot of time comparing many Celestions, Tone Tubby's, Webers, Eminence, etc in different combinations and I've noticed that matching the SPL as closely as possible does make an audible difference.
Take with large grain of salt . . . just another opinion

Hey Phil!zaphod_phil wrote:What about the Celestion Vintage 30, Dan? IIRC that's also 100db/W@1m, like the G12H-30 and G12 Blue. And the V30 is also quite popular paired with the G12H-30.
Way too late for me to look it up right now, but I remember the G12H and the Alnico being up around 109db, the highest of the Celestions. I could be wrong . . . it happens all the time. But I could of sworn that the V30 was lower . . . let me know if I'm wrong and I'll edit the earlier post.
Ciao!

Thanks for the speaker info, now about that schematic?
Thanks to everyone who wrote about the speaker combo. Now I'm looking for the best schematic to build from. I love trem & reverb. Does anyone have a tested & quite amp that has both? Thanks in advance!

Might not be of much interest here, but this kind of fits in with the subject matter of mixing different speaker models...
Someone over at the Line6 POD forum, that I also frequent, posted this link:

These are 4x12 cabinets that also house a digital power amp. Made specifically for the "amp modeler" crowd, they contain four Celestion Speakers: (2)Vintage 30 & (2) G12H. Haven't heard them so I cannot comment.
