6L6 Circuit Ideas / Suggestions?

Post by MikeF »

Hello all,

I managed to get a hold of some really nice NOS 6L6's
I would like to put them to good use to really showcase their characteristics.

Has anyone built a 18watt front end with 6L6 power section?
Or a modified pre-amp/tone stack Tweed Super?

After building a 2-12 18W and a 18W lite I would like something with a bit more grunt....but not a beast 8)

Thanks for you input

Mike

I've built a 2x 6V6 amp..and an EL34 amp,and the 36 watter.
But not a 6L6 type amp of the 18..i have tried the tweed tone circut, and it works very good If you want an amp with more ooomfff..try the 36 watter.
You'll have an amp plenty loud enough, and it keeps more with the EL84 sound.
But you could use 6L6s..you'll have to find trannys and things like that to use. Change some of the circut to run or match up to the 6L6s.

Yes, I belive it has been done before too. You can build an 18W with 6L6s on the power end, but it will be a very clean amp, as the 18W distortion tone tends to depend a lot on the overdriven EL84s. Be sure to reduce the PI tail resistor value to around 15 or 20k to get enough drive to the 6L6s. You may also want to put 1M grid leak resistors on the PI instead of the more usual 470k.
