Hoffman 6v6 Plexi kit. Opinions?

Post by 3jaw »

Hello all,
This is my first post to this forum and I would like to get some opinions about the Hoffman Plexi 6v6 kit since I haven't seen much info about it. I have nearly completed the Hoffman 5e3 kit and have enjoyed the build very much, plus it sounds great. I still need a 1x12 speaker cabinet to house the WGS G12Q speaker. It was my first amp build and I want to build an 18 watt Marshall next. The quality of the Hoffman kit for the most part was very good. I had to source my own transformers and I built the chassis from a Hammond blank, but that was all part of the fun.
Anyway, has anyone built this kit and if so what is your opinion of it, i.e. how did it sound, hum or noise issues, quality of the chassis and kit components, build difficulty, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Sorry, doesn’t ring a bell that anyone here has built the hoffman kit. Mostly GDS or something. I build my own stuff based upon JMP Guitars layouts

that is a great amp. very versatile, lots of good sounds. I've built it twice. 1st as a head for a cabinet I had, then as a combo, and added the 1 tube reverb by Tubinit (I think). a gigging friend made me sell him the combo a couple years ago. I immediately bought the parts to build another but haven't done it yet... too many other projects. the Hoffman forum is quite active & lots of help. I used Hammond transformers for Marshall style 18 watt amps. the power trans was a PAZ. don't remember the rest of the numbers. Speaker Warehouse ET65

I built my own chassis for both. and I should add that I have built other designs from other names. none better than Hoffman. I've built 3 of his designs, they work right with no fussing around. the parts count is always right. he ships fast too. back to the Plexi... the cab had a 12" ET, the combo had a 10" ET. also, I moved the controls around on the combo
