Cap comp for Tremolo

Post by PhatTele »

Is there a preference for which composition to use for the 3 .01 uF caps in the Tremolo circuit? I noticed in the pictures that most folks use 3 ceramic caps. I've seen ceramics used inside Fender amps too (Princeton Reverbs, Deluxe Reverbs, Vibrolux Reverbs, and Bandmanster Reverbs specifically). Could Mallorys or Orange Drops work too or is there something about the composition which lends itself to using ceramic caps for Tremolo? Thanx...

I don't know that anyone has tried a different cap type (I've never built the trem). I have to think that it wouldn't make any difference, and might even work better. Try it and report back your results.

I'll ask an amp tech friend of mine too. I seem to recall him saying (way back before any of this amp building stuff made any sense to me) that the ceramic caps might lend themselves to this application. It could be too that what he was saying was that any cap composition will do and back in the old days Fender/Marshall/etc. just used whatever was cheapest for that application. If I can translate his response, I'll post it here.

I used orange drops (I didn't know better then) in my self built Fender Super Reverb and they worked fine. I used Ceramics in the Marshall 18 watt and they worked fine as well. I'd just use the cheap ceramics.

Just about any type can be used... its funny because in almost all the fenders they used the .01 or .02uf disc caps in the trem circuts..except for the old blonde "Trem-O-lux" and it used the blue mallory..

A discussion came up on Ampage a long while back about this..and i looked on the web for info. I did find one place..but forget now, where it was.. but it said the disc caps were better suited for oscilator circuts..and went on to say something of there construction or how they were made had something to do with it. Most will probably say its all who-doooy, and for most part probably right. But other caps will work fine in the trem also.. The small Xicon brownish ones also fit good in this spot..and very inexpensive good cap. One of the main things in this amps trem circut is,make sure you use a good tube..you may have to go through a few to find one that works good in this amp. Hope this helps..
