Your favourite 18watt modification?
Hello everyone.
I have been itching to build an 18watt, but have no desire for tremelo, so I think a Lite version would be the way to go.
I have read many posts on Lite, Lite II etc, but would like to know what is your favourite?
Are there any preferences for the tone stacks of the stock 18watt for the normal and tremelo channel? Has anyone put a bass/mid/treble or bass/treble tone stack in there 18watt?
Thanks,
Jude

Hey Jude!
Welcome to the group. There are a few different routes you can take to replcae the tremolo with a tonestack. Many have been tried. The Hiwatt tonestack is quite popular (do a search for the Marwatt, which is the 18W with the Hiwatt tonestack) Richie's TMB is an option. You can also try the AX84 November which as I understand it is basically a Marshall JCM800 tonestack. You can almost use any tonestack that you might find out there. If you run into problems, you can ask questions here and usually the folks here can help.
If you decide to make just a Lite, then I can sell my Mini-18W chassis alone which has everything punched for a single input, vol and tone. You could possibly fit a couple more pots on the faceplate to use a tonestack in that amp. It would make for a 12" wide head as well which would be a cool little beast. The chassis itself is only 11" wide.

Your favorite TONESTACK in your 18watt?
Thanks, Graydon.
I should have specifically asked about tonestack mods, since that was the big one for me. I changed the subject line now to reflect that.
Thanks for your offer also for the chassis but I already have one. I figure I"ll drill enough of holes to try different tonestack methods and then make a faceplate to suit and cover any that are not needed.
There is a similar thread on the ax84.com bbs, so I'll get opinions there too. One point made is that the volume/tone controls are too interactive. I like a minimal change in tone and rather using the volume knob as a gain control. Actually, I have only had a tube amp since this summer, and didn't know the expressiveness a volume control on a guitar. For the longest time I didn't know how people turned down the gain with a roll on a volume knob.
Lastly, I followed your link to your Japanese distributers site. You know, just in case I'm ever in Tokyo and need to pick up an amp. Anyways, there's a couple of typos, one main one being speaker loads listed in watts rather than ohms. Just so you know.
Thanks again,
Jude
