Hammond 1645 OPT

Would this transformer be a good choice? It's nominally rated at 5k at 30w. for the pt I was going to use 270hx 275-0-275.

I've been trying to find a PDF data sheet
other than the one I have.
It says the Impedence is 10,000 for push pull.

If thats true, my OT 7,600 ohm primary isn't the best match.

The Hammond 16XX series hi-fi OTs don't really sound that good with 18W type amps. OK I know we're talking 36W here, but I think the same will apply...

If you used a 1650f 7600ohm primary rated for 25watts you could just connect the secondarys for a missmatch (4 ohm speaker to 8 ohm tap, or 8 to 16) and get 3800 ohms reflected to the 4 tubes. This tranny's output would become a bit less HiFi when pushed to 36 watts.

Will 275v - 0 - 275v be enough for a 36w with a tube rectifier? and what would be needed for a ss rectifier?

does anyone know the specs of the marshall dsl 401 OT?

The 401 has 4xEL84 so i guess the OT should work, should it not?

I've just finished two 18 watt Lite's, one with a Hammond 125E and the other with a 1650. The 125E sounds better. It's about half the price of the 1650, but it produces a better 'Marshall' type tone, particularly overdrive and distorted tones. The 1650 is a drier, more hi-fi sound. However, the 1650 clean tones are very nice. If you are going for tone that is true to the original intent of the 18 watt design and you want to use Hammond OT's, go with the 125E, save some bucks and you'll be happy with the result.

The 125E is big enough for an 18W, but not for a 36W. But yes, the 16XX range do sound more sterile and hi-fi to most folks' ears.
