36 Watt Vs Mark Huss or similiar 6v6 Plexi?

anybody build both of these or get a chance to compare similiar builds? trying to choose between the two. Already built 2 18 watt trems heads , Tweed Champ and Deluxe , and a JTM-45 . Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah I was wondering that too. I have a ~'58 tweed Gibson GA-9 with 1-10. I KNOW it isnt a plexi at all but...I also have an old '60s 2-EL84 amp...also not a plexi. The 2 amps are I'm sure, very different, but MY ears tell me that the 6v6s are just WAY darker than 84s. 84s can be toned down a bit with the amp but I dont know how much "teeth" you can get out of a 6v6. Again...could just be 2 completely different circuits talking to (yelling at) me.
I just wonder what the real tonal difference between a 30 watt plexi (jtm45) and a 36 watt is. I can sure NAIL plexi tones (and everything else) with the 4-EL84 powered 36 watt. Guess the jtm can just get you all the way knee-deep into the melted chocolate or what?
I'm in a bit of a bind....I dont have a JTM and this stupid 36watt has cured my amp GAS. Well OK hasnt cured the GAS...just the NEED for a wicked amp. I still want a JTM....just dont think I need one. PLEASE tell me I'm wrong!

I built the earlier version of the 36 watter and it just kicks serious buttocks although I've never played the 6v6 plexi so I can't comment on that one.

The 6V6 plexi is just a 20 watt (although I have a 4x 6V6 in the to-build queue ). The 36watt will do clean a bit louder.

I like the sound of your 6v6 plexi. That's a real interesting PI arrangement. I like the clips alot.

I used a fairly standard Deluxe reverb style output section for a high gain amp with an SLO style preamp. This amp actually started out as an enhanced JCM 800 style preamp into a single ended output section but it grew as a test bed over time.

In fact, I'm building my second version of it this week.

I've been mulling over the idea of a 36 with two 6V6 and 2 EL84 and a switch for A, B , A+B. For the preamps I want a EF86 with rotary switch , a dual triod with Lightning bass and treble , and a TMB. Oh yeah and a variable voltage on the power section.
Maybe I should just build three or four amps instead.

I post some clips when I'm finished with the head. The combo is a little bit noisey due to how it has been cobbled together.

I tried one that was running JJ 6V6s with a B+ of 470V. I'm pretty sure it was putting out a good bit more than 20W. It was damn loud! It had beautiful shimmering cleans and rich, creamy overdrive tones. Folks who've seen my previous posts on the subject will probably remember my allusions to "melted golden mocha chocolate" tones.

JT, just build it! Especially, if you've already done a couple of 18Ws and and a JTM45. So it's time you tried something a little different each of those.

You know I don't know what I was looking at, because your right it is just a standard Marshall/Fender PI.

Do you mean ax84 November? It's basically the same thing, but with different output stages and appropriate PI tweaks.

The sound is a bit different. listen to the respective clips to get an idea.

Cliff basically took Mark's 6V6 design and added a few extra tweaks of his own, which became the October. The story should be there on his site, or at least it used to be. Personally, I like the simplicity of Mark's original version.

For some reason, the October is not listed on the main ax84 projects page. How did you come across it?

The Plexi 6v6 is an excellant project. I highly recommend that build for anyone looking for something a little different than the 18 watter.

I built it with a couple of 18 watt Trannys and a Deluxe Reverb Choke. My only mods to Mark's design were to the PI. I felt the Marshall PI drove the 6v6's a little to hard for my taste and the Deluxe Reverb PI seemed to rob it of just a little headroom as well. I wound up using a 820 as the Bias resistor and an 8.2k for the tail. Basically it's like a Brownface PI. Along with a couple of 1940's RCA 6v6G's I get just a little more clean headroom and it really grinds thick and dark when cranked.

Just a great little amp!
