Tremolo problems Here too

redid some wiring in the tremolo section as i was having some problems.......Both channels work when tremolo is switched off...... The problem i have is the tremolo when switched on seems to vary in intensity ..meaning that sometimes i can get the tremolo to sound deep and great and then on its own it sees to have a reduced effect and the Intensity and speed knobs do not do much until around 8 or so....... i tried moving wires around and rechecked V3 .i also reheated the solder on the Lugs to make sure there is not a cold solder joint.....Do you have any ideas? When i get it to work it sounds great and lush .also when i move some of the pots to extremes it sometimes motorboats or white noise..... it will also sometimes motorboat when the switch is turned on and i am in the normal channel

Hi, I have just fixed the problems with my trem and what worked for me was to used shielded cable between the board and pin 7 on V3. I also used the shielded cable onto the connector for the footswitch which in my case is an RCA connector. This has worked really well as before I had the shielding, I had terrible tremolo beating which I thought was motorboating! Hope this helps .

Thanks for the reply!....when you said you used shielded cable did you use it ungrounded? ir did you ground the sheilding to something like the input jacks?

OK Paul, the proof is in the pudding. Hopefully, you're correct and can save me the hassle of having to route this channel with shielded wire.

Right now, I get motorboating if I don't have the tremelo grounded, and I get a beat if I do. I have just a switch through the chassis hole where I'll eventually mount the pedal, so I obviously don't have the capacitance of a long cable run.

I now head out to the garage to wire it as follows:

- pin7-sw pin 1
- sw pin 2 - gnd
- 100pf cap from sw pin 1 to sw pin 2

I'll report back in a few minutes to see if the beating has subsided.

Results:

The motorboating with the trem off is gone. But with the trem on, the beat goes on.

Oh well. I guess I might have to try some wire shielding afterall. I'm guessing the shielded wire has the twin benefits of shielding AND a bit of added capacitance between pin 7 and ground.

What you might try is.. make sure the cathode is 820 ohm resistor... change the 2.7M to 1 meg.. this should take away the thump when the trem is on and the intensity pot is off.. Somewhere in the archives are some of the trem changes to help tame it..And it also works very good with those values. Look at your speakers and see if you see them move in and out or a thumping like noise.. Should stop when trem is ground {off} Also one thing that really matters seems to be what tube is in that spot..sometimes it takes going through a few, to find one that works with the trem.. And some get lucky and it works fine..I know its sounds crazy,,but believe me its true..lol

The shielded cable I used was grounded.

I remember reading about the tube in that spot, and tried quite a variety. New JJ (actually 2 different ones), older (unused) JJ, old sovtek, amperex, a chinese no marking, EI, and a couple of others. All showed almost exactly the same behavior.

I might try the 1M resistor trick.
