Amps like this and the THD Univalve are basically the same as the P1 Chameleon from the AX84 site, but over-priced for what they are. So just build yourself a Chameleon instead - http://ax84.com/media/ax84_m41.pdf

Hey Phil; sorry if I sound dumb here, but I just want to make sure I'm getting this right. The P1 and the P1 Chameleon are two different circuits, right?

And the Chamelion is the "Roscoe Primrose" version, right?

Thanks, Artie

Phil; and anybody else for that matter, let me pose this question in this manner:

If you were going to build yourself a small tube amp, say, in the .5 to 5 watt range,
what would you select?

Thanks again, Artie.

Well the Chameleon is a variant of the P1 which allows you to use various different power tubes. The regular P1 only uses an EL84 tube. So if you want to try different tubes that is a very good one to go for. Otherwise, I think if it were me, I would probably build the Firefly, with the cascode-boosted front end, as that's quite abit lower in power and has great overdriven tone. I've built a couple of different P1 variants and found with reasonably efficient speakers they could get loud enough to rattle windows - especially the P1 eXtreme!

Then there's Torres Engineering. Dan has several low-watt kits 4 sale. Also, Zvex makes a mini.
I , personally built a HO kit from Doberman with the 6n1p low power option. It's still just a chassis, which I run thru the 12 inch in my MusicMan RD-112 combo.
It sings!!!
:D

Phil; I know I've heard the Firefly name before, but for the life of me, can't find the link either here or on the AX84 site.

Do you have a link? Thanks.

Edit: Nevermind. Forgot about our good buddy Google.

They're appear to be some very cool tube amp projects here also:

Especially the Li'L 4x4 project looks interesting. Lots of cool projects here.

When I last looked, they seemed somewhat over-priced.

Artie, the Dog Star amps are real cool. However, they're not that simple for a first build. To be honest the AX84 amps are probably a better bet, for after the headphone amp.

Thanks for that caution Phil, although, I'm not really too concerned about the complexity of a project. I've been in audio/pro audio/avionics electronics the last 35 years of my life. I think I can handle it. Maybe.
