how hot should a tube get? I mean like scalding hot or just warm to the touch?

preamp is almost touchable, power tubes are hot as f@ck!!

If the glass shell melts the tube is too hot.

If your fingerprints singe on to the side of the tube it's too hot.

Seriously, if the tube red plates and you leave it that way long enough it can actually soften the glass, been there, done that!

Same with leaving a couple layers of skin on the side of a tube. All the major tube manufacturers used to supply little rubber sheaths to techs to pull tubes with, it saves burnt fingers. I still have a couple dried out Sylvania and Zenith pullers somewhere.

I replaced the tube and the old tube reallly really brought out the sound. Alas the amp is still doin it though.

This one must have been a degree or 2 over the allowable limit
