Shinrock Transformers

Post by zaphod_phil »

I was talking to Ingo on the 'phone today. He is having trouble keeping his ahead above water at the moment. Here's what's happening. He never expected his OT to do so well in the last shoot out. Now hes getting swamped with orders from all over the world. Why is that a problem? Well, he winds these transformers one at a time by hand. And he also has his day job too, as the transformer business is something he does as a labour of love. Not only that, but for every single order there's an *average* of four or five e-mails, asking for shipping and pricing information and so on. Now he's torn between being an e-mail answerer and a transformer builder, and having trouble coping with either at the moment. Ingo is very consciencious about what he does, and likes to deliver fast. But now he finds himself unable to, and that's upsetting him too. Basically, it's turning into a stressful situation. Plus, he doesn't want people feeling offended if he isn't responding to their e-mail fast enough.

So I'm sending this out for everyone to understand a little better what's happening here, and hopefully cut Ingo some slack. I have recommended that Ingo puts up shipping, delivery and price information on his web site, with the prices both in US $ an €uros, so that orders can be placed with a lot less e-mail traffic, and he can get back to concentrate on building transformers for everyone.... :D

Phil : thanks for the info..

"""He never expected his OT to do so well in the last shoot out.Now hes getting swamped with orders from all over the world. Why is that a problem? """

That happens..I remember when Speedracer was doing the first OEI..and they were swamped too..
I think this thing also happened to Jeff Swanson..he was swamped too for a bit, and had to stop taking oderes till he caught up.

I had someone ask me about building amps for them in quanity..
I had to explain i just couldn't do that..i take my time and build one at a time, and they have to sound right to me,before i let them go.
And i couldn't build 10 or 15 amps in a couple weeks.Plus my main job,and home life..
It makes a difference when you put your name behind something, no matter how many great amps you build, it only takes one bad rap to kill all you've worked for,or at least hurt your reputation..

I know EMC made great trannys too, but sometimes it was a wait to get them..about 3 months.
Maybe in a few years when i retire from my main job, i'll take up building
amps more as a full time thing..lol
I guess if Ingo could get someone to help him..or at least do the phone and e-mails,and parts ordering..he could use that time for the winding..
Anyway i guess thats what happens when someone builds something alot of people want..

That's true. Tiny one-man operations like that, say, if the person catches the flu or gets in an accident, has some sort of unforeseen problem, etc., there can be delays in answering e-mails and product delivery, and if everyone sends a "What's going on w/my order?" email, that can make it even more difficult for the person to deliver a timely response, and maybe they get even more mails making it yet even harder to respond, lol. So I guess you do have to be aware of that and cut the smaller guys some slack, so as to not "victimize them w/success", so to speak and possibly give them incentive to stop making the niche products or raise prices substantially. If you just cannot stand waiting(which I can understand), the bigger manf.s are an option to consider.

Time till shipping

Post by bnwitt »

I would suggest Ingo put a current time till shipping of transformer on his site to give those ordering an up front estimate. That would reduce aggravation during the wait.

At the moment Ingo appears to be in a state where he would find it hard to provide a good time estimate. Previously, he has always shipped fast, because he has only been dealing with small numbers of orders. Now he finds the situation has gotten somewhat out of control, and he's struggling to find a way of handling it.

Thanks for relaying that information to us Phil. I ordered my transformers just before the shootout result. Perhaps I should have realised that after that Ingo would have been inundated. It is essential that all those who have ordered cut Ingo some slack here and be patient otherwise we may lose altogether what may well be a valuable source of quality transformers here in Europe, which we desperately need. You guys in the US are lucky to have a wide range of suppliers - Heyboer, MM etc, etc.

Ingo it is obvious that you are a very professional person and I can understand your frustration at having to struggle through this, but please try to stick with it. - No more e-mails from me for a while and thanks for taking the time to answer my last one promptly.

Hello,

first thank you to Phil for posting some nice words and explaining the situation in the moment and my apologies to Nigel and Steve.
It´s really not easy handling all the e-mails, telephone calls and winding the transformers. I have to find a solution and I´m working on it. For me the quality of the transformer stands on the first place and if I have not tested it, I won´t send it. Handling greater quanties is more difficult as I have expected.

Thank´s for the patient to all

Kind regards
Ingo

I think you're doing a great job and a little waiting is good for the soul...slows us down to a more reasonable humanistic speed.

ie: Macdonalds food in a macdonalds world aint necessarily the best way...

[I am paranoid about royal mail so I tend to check up on shipping conscientiously.]

BTW; I received my two sets of 18 watt transformers today...they look absolutely great.

Is there an idiots guide type diagram for wiring the mains tranny into the 18 watt circuit, the OT has a nice clear one and we shouldn't need one for the mains tranny but if there is one then where would I find it? I'll be fine without it, I expect but could be useful.

thanks again...they look very pleasing.

cheers

Hello Roy,

thank you for your complements.

Connecting the PT is very easy. The left row are the mains-voltages. Take 0V and 240 Volts for the UK. Besides you find the heater for the rectifier-tube. For the EZ81 take 0V and 6.3 Volts turrets. 3.15/CT/3.15 are connections for the heaters of the amplifier-tubes. 300/CT/300 are for the anodes of the EZ81. Both CT turrets and Screen has to be fit to ground. I know, for me it is easy but it looks like, that I have to write a description.

Kind regards
Ingo

Ingo,
It would be good to have diagrams of your trannies in the Transformer section under Downloads. Also, from the photo I saw of the PT connections there is no 120v primary connection? Is that correct?
Thanks, markd

Hello Mark

your´re right :) Perhaps Gabi would be so kind to download the PDF file and put it to the Downloads. I´m doing just some 120 Volt trannies, which will have primary taps for 110/115 and 120 Volts. Photos will follow.

Datasheet SOT-M18R

I confess - I was meant to be sending Gabi the diagram for Shinrock's 18W OT. Just hadn't got round to it, yet....

I'll e-mail it to him now!

Thanks Ingo/all

Just one more question on this.

Does the screen have to go to a different earth point to everything else?

It just looks weird on it's own like that - guess it's the physical process of manufature requiring it to have it's own turret?

thanks

Ingo,

I understand how you feel, and what you experience. It gets crazy here as well sometimes.

Best bet is to see if it's worth it to get help, ie a person. You can opt for low cost labors, say family members who dont do anything better :)!

When I decided to get my assistant, I had doubts. Now I think it's one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The help will do things like answering general questions. He/she can also sort your mails for your (important!), as well as administrative work. And also to run to the shop to get u a pack of dunhills..;)

Thanks!

Nik
