Matchless hum
I know, it's not 18watt related, but I hang out here and you guys are so responsive (posted question on Matchless Yahoo group this morning and no responses). Anyway, a friend called me up and said that his Chieftain head has a loud hum. When he switches it to standby, the hum goes away. Volume is at zero. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Most of the off topic questions other than 18 watt marshall stuff is usually posted in the BBQ section.. So maybe they can move this post to that section. Some don't know this..
Anyway, as for the amp, it could be many things. I would look at the output tubes, and see if one is redplating. Could also be a recto tube,or a choke[if it has one]. A bad cap, sometimes they hum,and not blow a fuse. And i believe in the matchless, they are like taped in a stack, and not as easy to change..
But if its a loud hum when its switched on,and volumes down,i'd suspect it being in the power section. Its just hard to say.
