anyone here know of an amp that uses an el34 in class A, that i can find a schematic of? or possibly even a layout? since building my 18 watt TMB i now want to build amps that i can crank(without an attenuator). between 15 and 25 watts. and I have the 18 watt for the bad ass el84 tone, now i need a crankable amp with the el34 tone to complete my amp set up..

If you will excuse a shameless plug, try the "P1 eXtreme" from the AX84 site. It can be biased to take any of the common octal tubes. The one I built uses an EL34 for around 12W RMS out. Or with a JJ E34L or a 6L6GC you should be able to get around 15W clean. When cranked, it has a great fat n' crunchy Jimmy Page Marshall tone.

BTW, as this discussion is really about something other than an 18watter, I think it should probably be moved to the BBQ section....

The regular P1 eXtreme isn't really that high gain. It's more like a small Plexi, with plenty of crunch. However, if you add the cascode boost option, then it get's pretty hairy. Listen to some of the sound clips here -

Mike,
You could build Phil's P1 extreme in an 18watt chassis using the Heyboer 18watt Power Transformer. It has enough current capacity. The secondary voltage(290v) is a bit higher but if you use a tube rectifier(5V4,GZ34) instead of diodes the plate voltages will be in line.
The 18watt chassis would allow you to add a paralled 12AX7 preamp (or EF86 preamp) in addition to the TMB preamp in the P1 extreme.
Just a thought, markd
