Helpful forum, came here to look for few tips for my 18W, in the end turned out to be awesome amp.

I've used 6v6's and gz34 rectifier and it's killer. Trough my old 4x12 sounds dope, but I got it for practicality and promised that 4x12 to a friend long ago.

I have some experience woodworking, I helped a lot to my uncle around shop and I'm confident I will build decent cab.

What bothers me is ply dimension. I have to buy full plank, and thats 3m x 1,5m here where I live. I can only use 30% of that.
I was trying to get info on 2061cx material used for sizes, if its 1/2 (12mm) plywood, I could make that.

At what point did marshall switch to 5/8 for combos? If ever?


I know those are specific question, but I figured this is the right forum to ask.

I wouldn't worry about what Marshall did. Go take a look at the materials current cabinet builders say they use.

Here's a tip: regardless of what you see, use oak for the strips where panels are mounted. They'll hold up better than pine.

That requiers a little bit of decoding
Here is what I get

if they say they use 11 ply that's 5/8 BB plywod
if they say it's 13 ply then 3/4 BB
9 ply would be 1/2

now the only problem is no one is telling actually what they use

You can use whatever you want between the 3. The question is how heavy versus how firm do you want the cabinet. If your supports are weak, then you'll feel the walls of the cab flexing even if there's nothing wrong. I'm not a fan of that. BUT, if you don't want to break your back carrying a 3/4 walled cab around, that's something else to consider.

There's nothing wrong with building 1/2" if that's what you're comfortable with. Plan well, and use good supports so you don't feel too much flex in the wood. Flip a coin if that helps you decide.

Then I will go for 5/8, I will look thin enough too pul original 18W look, and I can use other part of board for extra cabinet and not waste anything.

Ok, now you've got me wondering - What did Marshall use for their cabinets and baffles in the mid 60's? (for 18 watt combos)
Thicknesses and type of wood.

Looks like 9 ply birch (1/2") was used for the cabinets and baffle board then.

Just checked and an 18W (clone) cab is 1/2" ply for the body and baffle, 3/8" for the two back panels.

Oh, right! I forgot the (thin) back panels.
