Is there an upper limit to using unmatched tubes?

I came across older posts suggesting that unmatched tubes contribute to a sweeter tone, and I had a similar experience a few years ago. In my 18, the tubes have an approximately 8mA difference, resulting in a really pleasant tone. Since my PT lacks a CT for the heating, I improvised by using two 100-ohm resistors. Now, I'm curious: would employing a linear pot with 250 ohms be effective in mitigating the hum caused by unmatched tubes? Additionally, is there an upper limit to using unmatched tubes?
