How to reduce mid range?

Post by NSky »

Hello everyone, I'm building my first tube amp (Lite IIb). I'm not chasing the authentic Marshall sound. I chose 18w mostly based on the components I had and was hoping to mod it to my taste. I'm going to use it with an external high-gain tube preamp. The speaker is Celestion G12 Vintage 30.
I just finished PI+PA section which sounds great but it is too much mid-high range for my taste.
I added NFB with Presence and Depth pots, so decreasing Presence helped to tame high freq, but mid is still too much with Mid set to 0% on my preamp. Can anyone suggest what can be changed in the attached schematics for lower mid while keeping low and high as is?
I attached the schematics of what I got so far.

First thing you need to do is ditch that V30. That is THE speaker to get maximum mid range and icepicky trebles. Try an American voiced speaker. Jensen C12N or something in the Eminence catalogue.
This alone will get you a long way ahead.
An 18 W lite is not that typical Marshall middy trebly tone kind of amp. It should be fat and juicy.. but with a V30 you’re asking for the tone you’re experiencing.
