5Y3 rectifier

Hi all,
I am about finished with my 18 Watter~!! wooHoo~!!
The only problem is that I am using a 5Y3 rectifier instead of the suggested recto. Will there be a tone change with what I am using??
The reason that I used it is that I had a NOS RCA sitting here and ordered a tranny to fit it, I think??

Can anyone forsee any problems that I might have??

I am not sure if I have it hooked up right. The tranny I am using is a Hammond 270DX. Will this provid ethe voltageds needed for this amp?? I sure hope so since I can't afford any others

Any advice will be much appreciated.
I want to fire it up but I want to make sure I am not going to fry anything before I do. I mean, That still might happen but I want to make sure it doesn't because of something stupid that I could have avoided.

Has anyone heard the new Crate Palomino series amps?? They use EL84's and have a lot of distortion and sound very Marshally. Will this amp have that kind of overdrive??

The 270DX and 5Y3 will work fine. I have made one just like this and had no problem at all.

OK how about this. I have the RED wires hooked up to 4 and 6 and the yellow wires hooked up to 2 and 8. I also have one of the standby wires hooked up to 8. Is this correct??

Groundpath :can you share a little more info on how you have the 270 connected?? I am a little nervoius about firing this up hehehehe

Bigolefatguy: I have the red/yellow CT cut and wrapped up.Is that what you mean??
I also want to add a MV to this amp for one side. Which side would you recomend??

The 5Y3 rectifier is fine.It is the ultimate voltage it produces that counts.
for a close formula for a 5Y3 rectifier: multiply the voltage rating of yout PT by 1.09
e.g. 270 X 1.09 = 294Volts.
This is an approximation and your actual voltage may differ a little up or down. Each rectifier is a little different.An NOS 5Y3 gives the least voltage and most of the new ones will give about 10-15 volts higher.If you gig with it,I would suggest a Weber copper cap.

Nuklhed, You have the rectifier wired correctly. The red/Yel center tap should be grounded to one of the transformer bolts though. From memory I think I was getting around 309V on the plates of the EL84s. Good luck on the fireup.
