OT Winding

Post by ampkits »

Hello all,

Hey because I dont have enuff to do ;) I decided I'd learn how to wind OT. An old guy here is willing to teach, and I bought a manual winder from the 70s from him NOS for 25 bucks.

We'll see. The worst that can happen is I move some muscles..heheh..

*sigh* more readings to get up to speed on the matter.

Anybody here wind their own?

Maybe after this I make my own beer..now that's home brew..

Thanks!

I had a homebrew beer hobby period before I got into amp building. Still have my stuff in storage and I often think about get it out to cook up a batch. Never enough time....

I know one or two guys on the AX84 site play around with winding/rewinding their own transformers. As far as I'm concerned, life's too short for that.... :)

Heya Phil,

How you doin?

Hehe yeah the old guy warned that it's time consuming. But here in malaysia we have a DIY group that is similar to 18W, except we dont have a portal, we only have mailing list.

There is resurgence into DIYing amps, and naturally, the trannies would be of interest, since there's no manufacturer here in Malaysia.

I just wanna try my hand on it :) There's some guys coming over when the winder's here and we all going to learn together. Hopefully, the interest could bring about a manufacturer or two here.

Thanks!

You might also e-mail Joe- (speedracer) at OEI.. hes a pretty busy guy but very helpful.. I remember when he first started doing the transformer stuff, and learning all he could. he could probably give you some places to look and serch for some good info too.. Hes on Amapge a,should have his contact there. Probably even give you some inside info on things.. He knows his stuff..

Nik, I think it sounds cool as hell. No matter what you'll learn a lot (even if it's only how hard winding transformers is!), and if it works out well, like you said there's demand for this sort of thing. I'm sure many of us here will be willing to help you with product testing, and we won't charge you much for our services. :)

Hey there!

Thanks for the info. I'll contact sppedracer (wow, he calls himself that? I always imagine myself as THE speedracer when I'm driving).

Hmm.. Richie you mean he just started doing trannies? And then start OEI? Wow..I always thought winding would be hard and you'd have to go to place like the Shaolin Temple for 15 years before becoming a master..

RicF. OK, don't charge me too much, man! Oh wait..hmm that doesnt seem right ;)

Alrite. Wish me luck. Probably I just have some fun with some of the guys. Not really looking to the selling side of it. I DO wish some of us will learn enough to sell. Then it'd be easy for me..

Thanks!

'''wow, he calls himself that''' well thats been his posting name on Ampage for years..

Hes not real new to the game, hes been doing this for a while..but probably not as long as a temple guru.. He worked pretty hard to get alot of the answers..and had some transformer gurus to help him.
He does the trannys as a side job. And may sound funny, but when he first did his trannys and testing them, he sure did send them around for
people to test out and give there opinions good or bad.. Its always good to learn from the old masters..

John Fisher left a good page describing how he did it over at ampage.

The page is here:
