Disk crashes, Gabi, Sean,etc.
Just something to think about, folks: disk is cheap these days, so you might consider RAID if you're concerned about losing (especially customer) data.
You often have a few options, depending on the operating system you're using. With Linux or BSD you can start really inexpensive and just use two mirrored drives, typically of identical geometry, doing software RAID1. I've not tried software RAID under Windoze, but I'm sure it's possible. Probably easier if you're already Windows based would be hardware RAID.
In either case, if you lose a drive then that's a drag, but your system keeps on ticking and you can replace the spare drive.
Just thinkin'...

Alex...
That is a marvellous idea!
I knew about RAID hardware. Is it that you have two similar hard drives on the same system plugged into a RAID controller, and everything as you've said is mirrored on both of them. I'll have to look into.
Adam and me were playing initially (and with quite a success) with mirroring the site to his web server with Cygwin. We might have to do that now...
Unfortunately I have to stick with Windoze for now at least...
thanks,
gabi.

Basically you need a disk controller with RAID 1 support and an extra hard drive. Disk mirroring is almost the most primitive form of RAID so any old board that your system supports should handle it.
If you want more information on it you can find it here:

Yes, just like that! An IDE RAID controller is something like $50, couple of say 40G drives, $50 a piece. So, it's an $150 investment, but I don't think that's awful compared to the amount of time I'm sure you've spent recovering the site!
Like everything else, it's just finding the time to get around to it. My main SPARCserver at home has been running for about three years with one drive and no backups...
BTW, I disemboweled my buzzing chassis this weekend. All the bits are just sitting there on the counter. Disturbing stuff. Still, I learned a *lot* putting it together, and I think my second attempt will be a lot better! Having seen the pictures of your new head, I just have to do the cloth wire thing...
