Trem circuit capacitors

Post by nigelb »

Just gathering components and starting build on my 18 watt circuit. I'm having a little trouble getting high voltage ceramic disk caps (C8-C10) from my normal suppliers here in the UK. Is it necessary to use 400v components here, I have 100v 0.01u caps but don't know what sort of voltages are present in this part of the circuit. I also have a lot of 0.01u 400v polyester caps, can I use these or do they have to be ceramics for some reason? I am unsure how this part of the circuit works.

Cheers

Those polyesters will work fine. Some amp makers say that ceramics 'sound correct', but my ears don't seem to be fussy. :)

I think there are good reasons why you need the high voltage rating there, but I'm still a newbie on theory, so you'll have to wait for an expert to turn up ;)

Actually, polyester should sound slightly less harsh than ceramic disc caps. BTW haven't you also recently been posting on the AX84 site?

Think I'll try the polyester caps.

Just need transformers now....

Yes Phil I have been posting on AX84, I have just finished a P1 build and it's really converted me to valves!! Want to try something a little more powerful now.

BTW I have hundreds of spare 0.010/1000V ceramic caps (TDK). Contact me if you needs any.
