Just won off ebay

possibly a good sounding amp. broken right now, but should be fixable. if not it looks like a perfect platform for another 18W! woohoo :P

anyone seen anything like this one before? after a little research it appears that 6973's are rare/pricey.

6973 are great little tubes.. that looks like the univox or danelectro/sears type amp. I believe they had someone building these for them, and they all looked somewhat alike in how they are built, and parts that were used..
Also those brown label Jensens..those had a silver dust cap.

Inside that amp,you can see those crappy grey oil caps, are almost always some bad.

This would make for a great 18 watter..it has all the tube sockets and set up very close..
The 6973 are a little pricey, but you can still find them at a fair price.
hearty little bottles.

some reading has indicated that those 6973's are tonally very good. i really hope that the problem with the amp is not those tubes! it's probably not the PT since it powers up

those grey caps huh? those looks easily replacable. the guy who sold it to me not only gave me a schematic for it, but they look very clearly labelled and wired to terminals.

I agree about the sound quality of the 6973's. I have a Supro with them and it is a great sounding little amp. Check to see if the voltage on them is more than the el34's. I remember reading that the could handle more plate voltage.

did you mean EL84?

it's the same noval socket with same heater pinout as the 84's. The rectifier is the same, B+ is slightly higher according to the schematic at 355V. not much higher than the highest voltages people get for the 18W, so it shouldnt hurt should i choose to convert. again, this isnt measured, this is what the schematic indicates. i should have it within a few days....

looking at the pics again..the filter caps have been changed..or replaced.
Amp with no sound..You'll need to chack voltages, and see what you have..
If there is no sound whatso ever..it could be the recto tube..which a voltage check will find out..If its cathode biased..the resistor could be open, even if the OT was bad,it would still be a good amp to use for an 18.. The chassis is also stamped with the tube numbers just like the univox and danelectro/sears.. I believe there were about 3 or 4 different amps that all looked like this. I've worked on quite a few of these type amps, and i always find alot of those oil caps to be bad.
Could even be as simple as a loose connection to the speaker jack or loose from the OT.

Hey Aaron,
Yeah, I watched that one all week too. I seriously considered it but I've got too many brands in the fire, so to speak, as it is. Good luck with it. Let us know how it comes out. Did you see the Tung-Sol 6973 quad that went in another auction? I think the BIN was $50 or so. You've got a great platform with decent parts to build something good. I'll have to stick with my Masco rebuilds for now.

Schweet find!
You may want to check the tube sockets too. The plastic may have become conductive over the years.

haha! i havent had much of a chance to work on it. BUT, the only reason the amp wasnt making a sound was because one of the power resistor-filter cap solder joints was *not connected* to the preamp circuit. once i fixed that, it made sound. the pot controls are scratchy, so it will need new pots, but I'm pretty sure everything else is usable. I could replace all the caps and stuff, but the 3 filter caps are all new anyway. I tried the speaker out by itself and it sounds really nice. It's a P12ps I think.

but yeah, it's still sitting, guts open, gathering dust really.

LOL that will probably happen to me too if I don't stay interested in it long enough. Do you know where to get info on converting 6973 to an el84 power section? Like a step by step mod... :?:
