I have my TMB 36W board built, still wiring the chassis/tubes and haven't got all of my pots in from Mouser yet so I still have some time to consider this.
First tone stack ... KF used 1M/25K/250K pots and 500pf/.022/.022 for TMB in the 'wreck pres upon which the TREX is presumably based but Richie's TREX has got the 18Wesque 250K/25K/1M pots in there which ends up with a much bigger midrange scoop and a lot more bottom end. Maybe that's a really good thing I don't know. Anyone care to comment? I was considering maybe going with 500K/25K/500K pots as maybe a compromise ... ??? Is that really going to screw up the amp's character (whether TMB or TREX)?
Also I dig the whole TREX tone (and the similar idea I have implemented in my Princeton Reverb), but I'm not sure if I am up for that ALL of the time. So I have been racking my brain trying to figure a way to switch it in and out but switching from CF to plate-load and moving the tone stack in the topology is just not going to happen with a switch. It'd take like a 9PDT.
Or a whole mess o' relays.So I'm working on the theory (which I guess I will get to test in about a week) that the "character" of the KF/wreck/TREX is mostly in the clipping stage and not really the tone stack topology. So looking at a regular TMB would it be workable to put that .0022uF/150K network in between A and B of V2? Would it still do the deed without changing the V2B from cathode-follower into the tone stack? It's reasonably easy to use a SPDT to switch in and out the .0022uF/150K, and I could also switch V2B from CF to plate-load along with the other switchout with a 3PDT but at that point the switch would be carrying B+ and there's no way around it, so it'd take a pair of DPDT relays.
I guess I'll fool with it in about a week and see what happens. I'll go ahead and put the components on the board on the extra turrets I have and do the old soldering-iron switch. Just looking for insight. I'm still a noob!!
